Analysis One

COLLAPSE

Following the understanding of what my fellow classmates said, just by looking at this self portrait, you can imply that the artist is feeling some sort of pain or suffering. In this painting, Frieda Kahlo depicted herself as having the body of a young deer, with her own head, crowned by antlers. The young deer is pierced by arrows and is bleeding and seems to be surrounded by a dead forest full of branches and trees. Researching the artists background to gain more insight about her, it is known that she was involved in a bus accident which caused her years of suffering; physical pain as well as emotional. Frida painted a total of nine arrows piercing her in this painting, which could possibly represent each of her different injuries that resulted from her accident. She’s been hit with these arrows, but shows no sign of discomfort. I believe this painting is expressing Frida’s sadness that she could not change her destinywhen an operation on her spine did not go well, but also her strength. I would consider this portrait to be considered surreal, with emphasis on Frida, using a naturalistic form of color.

COLLAPSE

Kahlo’s work is trying to tell us of her suffering. She uses arrows to represent the insults to her body. Warmer colors are used closer to the viewer while cool colors are used for the water and the sky. The cool colors feel refreshing. I feel as it the warm colors in the front represent a “hot spot” and she is far from being cooled down.

COLLAPSE

Frida Kahlo created a lot of painting of women in various situations. The deer painting represents more the struggle she has been through. The first element that she used was the power of shock. She created herself as a deer with her head, which if the first thing you notice because it doesn’t match. Another thing that is first noticed is that the deer is wounded. She wants the viewers to understand that she has had many obstacles in life but she managers to get over them, hence why you see her jumping. I would also concur that you notice the arrow in her neck is the “bloodiest” one, which from my beliefs, is that she didn’t like talking about them or they were hard for her to “swallow”.She also scales the deer to size. She doesn’t make herself seem powerful or unproportioned and she utilizes the atmospheric depth to show this. She also sees herself as targeted. A deer is something that is often hunted and killed. With the arrows you can tell that she has been targeted a lot.

COLLAPSE

The Little Deer by Frida Kahlo shows how powerful Kahlo was during a very terrible time in her life. In the textbook by Richard Lewis, he talks about how she went through a terrible accident and her spine and pelvis were shattered. She had to endure so much pain throughout her life, but she still continued to be a strong women and painted her pain through this painting. Her face looks perfect on the deer and it is just her body that is wounded. With her face not being injured, it gives the idea that her body can be hurt but not her own spirit. The fact that she painted herself with antlers may just have to do with power. Deers use antlers sometimes to fight, so they could represent her being ready to take on anyone or anything. The whole emphasis of this painting is on her since she is the focal point. The proportions look real because the body of the deer is normal and the trees are realistic.

COLLAPSE

As mentioned by others by looking at the painting there is a representation of pain. I think that it is important to note that her pain is caused by an outside source and by something that was out of her control. This could be comparable to the accident she survived, something that was out of her control. As also mentioned her face still remains calm and unharmed, I think this also shows that while she suffered a tragic event that changed her life, her identity of herself never changed.

COLLAPSE

Following the theme of my classmates, it seems that she is in an environment where she is constantly being targeted and hurt through circumstances beyond her control. It seems that the she had gone through many pains in her life prior to this painting which included having polio as a child, being injured in a traffic accident, and a marriage that consisted of affairs. I think the reason her face is so calm and her legs seem to be trying move is because through all of this she still carried on with life the best she could. I think the arrows along with darker colors represent the times that she was hurt but a little hope is represented like the cool blue in the background.
