Over the next two weeks, you will read FILLER TEXT. The ideas or FILLER TEXT Are the relationships associated between digital natives and these three categories identified in the literature as being positive or negative? How do you know? What evidence will tell you this?

In addition to linking theoretical ideas to one another, consider the definition of digital native. This seems like a good place to separate people who are more and less familiar with technology.

FILLER TEXT Who are the freshmen? Are they 18- and 19-year-old students, or are they older students pursuing second careers? Does the sample represent digital natives across multiple demographic background variables (e.g., ethnicity, gender, age) in all programs or just the one studied?

Beyond constructs and samples, without getting into too much statistical analysis, the survey tool had 51 items that were scaled by proficiency level based expert consultation, and item difficulty was evaluated using a pilot group. That seems good.

Questions to consider: The pilot group consisted of three pre-service teachers, and scaling experts were two technology professors and two technology staff. Are these groups sufficient to support the claim that the survey tool has good internal (item and difficulty) consistency?

Zero Tolerance Policy

This week will also discuss the zero-tolerance policy as a decision-making policy. Skiba and Rausch (2006) state:

Zero tolerance is the most widely implemented and scrutinized school discipline policy in the United States. A zero tolerance policy assigns explicit, predetermined punishments to specific violations of school rules, regardless of the situation or context of the behavior. In many cases, punishment for a violation under the policy is severe, such as suspension or expulsion from school. In theory, zero tolerance deters students from violent or illegal behavior because the punishment for such a violation is harsh and certain. (NEA, 2006, para. 3)

As you study this week’s required studies, think about the zero tolerance policies your school or district imposes on teachers, staff, and students. These policies make decisions without the use of data or collaboration and evaluation. Which policies might need revision or modification?As you progress through this week, additional critical issues faced in education and their challenges will be brought into discussions regarding decisions educators make and the processes involved in making those decisions. Be ready to take a stand!
