Topic. The paper starts with a research question, then develops an answer to that question. You already proposed a research question in the 1-2 page question paper done earlier in the course. For this paper, put the question in the first paragraph. As noted earlier in the course, papers outside of the scope of the course (for example, on U.S. foreign policy, or papers researching the future) are not acceptable. The paper must focus on a topic relevant to the course objectives.

Sources. There should be at least 2 sources analyzed in the paper. This is a minimum.At least one of these sources must come from outside of the course syllabus; this may be a book or scholarly journal item.

Length. 3-4 pages, typed double space, standard 12-point font and standard margins. Number all pages.

Who is the reader? Imagine the reader is your boss, who pays you to do this project. The reader accordingly is very interested in quickly finding the question (reports like this cross the boss’s desk daily and remembering what you were asked to look into is helpful). More important, the reader wants to know the answer to the question and what information that answer is based upon.

Evidence. The reader needs the analytic help of the writer to understand how a quotation or a description of what one source says relates to the question. Thus, the key is your analytic work in elucidating how various kinds of evidence fit together into an answer to the question. Make sure to share that analytic work with the reader.

Citations. Any of the usual styles of citation is acceptable.Be consistent throughout the paper.
