In order to bring everyone on the same page and lead the project towards the success, having excellent communication skills and good co-ordination is required which helps to keep everyone in loop and to bridge the gap between resources and different teams. Good and precise communication skills help to avoid the assumptions, unknowns during project development which would in the end reduce the eventual failures in future.
Herb has been working with the company for more than eight years, during which he has been part of various R&D projects. He also carries the reputation of subject matter expert. Having this amount of experience and expertise in the product they are planning to manufacture, makes person qualify for the job of project manager in my opinion. However, Herb has no prior project management experience neither he has ever gone through the project management training which should have been raised as a concern. But this project was going to be implemented in two phases, R&D and Implementation, Herb should have utilized his time of R&D phase in learning about project management skills. This project management training during R&D phase would have made his project management skills more groomed.
With Alice: Since Alice just told Herb about her possible promotion but never asked for any recommendation but she just assumed to get a recommendation from him. As Herb being a project manager for the first time, he might not be aware of these responsibilities as a manager. So, there was a breakdown in encoding the communication.
With Bob: Herb has provided the specifications to the engineers, but it was not in written as the way it supposed to be. As a result, engineers forgot about the specifications. This has again happened because of the gap in encoding the communication
With Frank: Frank was not in the loop with the communication Herb and Bitty were having about the procurement. Being a manufacturing engineer, he should be the part of all procurement related decisions.
With Bitty: Herb just asked Bitty to determine the final cost, but Bitty decoded that message incorrectly. Clearly if Frank was involved in this conversation, he would have bridged the communication gap between them.
