Master of Public Administration Mission Statement

Introduces students to a variety of standard research methods. Students will develop research instruments, collect and analyze data. Includes application and interpretation of statistics.

RATIONALE:

This course teaches students how to evaluate what others have published on their research topic of interest. Students will develop scholarly and practitioner research questions. Students will select the most appropriate research design and be taught to collect and analyze data (nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio). The skills learned in this course prepare students to write scholarly articles, grant proposals for funding, and how to evaluate existing government and nonprofit social service programs.

This course is intended for students pursuing their graduate degree in Public Administration, Political and Justice Studies, Criminal Justice, or a graduate degree in the social sciences. This course is also open to public sector practitioners who want to develop their research and writing skills.

ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENTS/REQUIREMENTS:
Class Assignments: All written assignments must follow 6th Edition APA format. The APA Manual can be found in the reference section at most libraries. Basic APA format is available on the GSU website. Five points will be deducted from assignments that do not follow the APA format.

Cover page prepared in APA format.
An abstract prepared in APA format.
Reference page prepared in APA format.
The sources cited in the body of the text must be presented in APA Format.
All assignments must be double-spaced – 12-point font.

At Governors State University all projects involving human subjects must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board.

The purpose of the IRB is to ensure the protection of human research subjects. Code of Federal Regulation Title 45, Part 46 requires that all institutions receiving federal funds and conducting research using living humans establish and operate an IRB.

IRB Training: Certificates illustrating IRB Training Completion must be submitted Thursday, February 22, 2018. Certificates completed after the deadline date will not be awarded 20 points. You cannot conduct your study without IRB certification.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL: The final proposal for this course must include the following sections and subheadings. Proposals that do not contain these sections will result in points being deducted from the final grade.
